so I'm working with someone inside my
Consulting program and we had a
discussion today that I thought could be
valuable for a lot of people so I wanted
to put this into the form of a video and
this discussion centered around
prototypes and I find that I get
questions like this in all shapes and
sizes a lot and so I do think it could
be valuable um for many people so if you
are an inventor if you have a product
idea and you're either getting ready to
get to that prototype stage or you're
already there and you're one ing how
fancy it needs to be and how you know
how much you need to put into this what
I would say is that every situation is
definitely different there are
situations where it does behoove you to
hire uh a company that specifically does
prototyping that caters really to your
specific Niche so I would be careful
with what company you hire to do that
because you do want to make sure that
they know or have done things within
your category in the past I've seen a
lot of people people hire um companies
that say they can build a prototype and
charge them thousands of dollars to do
that and then they later realize that it
really wasn't a specialty for them and
they ended up having to do two or three
Renditions of the Prototype which just
got them deeper and deeper
financially having said that I also
believe there are many times when a
homemade prototype is just fine and me
included most of my products I've done
with homemade prototypes things that are
right around my house that I just needed
that proof of concept that it could work
if I brought it to Market I needed to
play with the sizing I needed to play
with the functionality and I literally
took things from around the house or
things that I bought at Home Depot and
created it myself just so I knew that it
would do what I wanted it to do but
here's a situation with my client today
she uh came up with a really brilliant
product actually and it is within the
hair appliance space we'll say I can't
disclose what it is obviously but it's
within that world and and coming up with
a prototype building a prototype for
this specific product idea would take a
lot of time it would take a very
specialized company or individual that's
you know
very something very highly engineered
we'll say and it would cost a boatload
of money and if it wasn't done right the
first time and tweaks needed to be made
it would cost another boatload of money
and a whole lot more time my advice to
this particular client was to not do a
prototype at all we know conceptually
that it will work we don't need a
prototype to tell us it can do what we
know what we think it can do and because
she wants to license this product to a
large company in that hair care space if
she were to make a prototype and spend
all this time and all this money chances
are if a company decides to license it
they're probably prob going to scrap
that prototype anyway because they want
to have some say so in what this product
ultimately looks like and how it's
shaped and and what the costs are around
it and so forth so they're going to
immediately create a prototype for the
product if they're interested in it
they're going to do that themselves
anyway they already have the technology
they already have the engineering they
already have the factory to do all that
so why waste all that time and all that
money just to have something to present
present when you could create a
presentation that's way better than
anything a prototype a first level
prototype could ever communicate so
instead we're focusing her effort on
creating an amazing cell sheet really
strong cell sheet with really great data
from market research that she's been
doing from researching competitive
products and where they're you know
where are the deficits with those
products and how is hers going to be
different researching the market to
understand what the trajectory is or
isn't how crowded the space is or isn't
all of that inside of a shell sheet
where we are also simultaneously having
a 3D photorealistic rendering done of
the product that makes it look like the
product already exists even though it
doesn't so the combination of those two
are just going to make an incredible
sell sheet that will sell the product
itself but then we're taking it a step
further because there are some kind of
moving parts to it where we are having a
realistic 3D animation movie if you will
done of the a video of the product so it
will look and feel like this product
exists even though it doesn't and so
conceptually whoever the lensey
potential leny is they're going to see
this video they're going to see this 3D
rendering that looks like a real
photograph and they're going to have all
of this research done for them and we're
also coming up with some really great
branding so they can really get a vision
of what that's going to be like too that
goes with it and we're securing um
different social media profiles and URLs
and things like that so that time and
money is so much more well spent in this
particular case on this amazing pre
presentation than if we had been working
with a prototyping company not that I
don't believe in those I do for certain
situations but for this situation do you
see how that makes so much more sense
and do you see how that time and energy
spent on creating such a great
presentation could really make all the
difference between success and failure
which is if if she had come in with this
prototype that was made that kind of
represented what she wants to do but
most of the times they really don't
quite represent it just right so it can
almost hurt you more than it can help
you so I just wanted to share that
because I'm super excited about what
she's doing with it and and the
presentation that we're creating and
then simultaneous L we're coming up with
a short list of who those potential
lenses are so that we'll we'll be
presenting to all of those once it's all
ready so I think it's very exciting and
if it could save you time and energy and
money and and you can end up with even a
better presentation for having heard all
of this then that makes me happy so just
wanted to share that with you and as
always if you ever have any questions
about any of the the video content that
I talk about please uh add it to the
description add it in the comments below
and I will try to respond to every
single one of them have a wonderful day
